Honours program

Computing Honours

This additional one-year program is normally undertaken by students with an excellent academic record in the Bachelor of Computer Science or Bachelor of Information Technology degrees who wish to broaden their knowledge as further preparation for professional practice or to meet the requirements for admission to a research degree.

Students enrolled in the program are required to complete a project and directed courses in research methods or advanced topics in computing.

Mathematics Honours

The Bachelor of Mathematics (Honours) is a one year full-time (or equivalent part-time) program that allows students to further develop their specific areas of interest and their research skills. Honours programs are available in Mathematics and Statistics and are considered pathways to enhanced career prospects in business and industry as well as a Research Higher Degree.

Physics Honours

The Bachelor of Science (Physics Honours) is a one year full-time (or equivalent part-time) program that allows students to further develop their specific areas of interest and their research skills. Honours programs are available in Physics and are considered pathways to enhanced career prospects in business and industry as well as a Research Higher Degree.

The extra one year of studies primarily opens the avenue for further studies, i.e. Masters and PhD, but the skills that you will gain in your Honours year will better prepare you for the workplace as well. Your Honours project will be the largest project that you have undertaken while at the University, and will present itself as the better evidence of your (a) technical skills, (b) ability to work under pressure and with time constraints, (c) communication, both oral and written, and (d) self-learning and organisational skills. Most companies put a lot of value in that extra year of experience when interviewing and hiring new staff. For more information about honours, please see the document below (designed for Computing), and feel free to contact your Head of Discipline or undergraduate Program Convenor. They will be glad to talk to you and explain the benefits of the program.
