Establishment
This scholarship has been established to support the development of the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health researchers. It reflects the University of Newcastle’s ongoing commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander advancement and recognises the important role of Indigenous-led research in improving health equity.
The scholarship is offered through the research team led by Professor Michelle Kennedy, Wiradjuri woman and nationally recognised leader in Aboriginal health research. By providing structured research experience and financial support, the scholarship aims to create meaningful opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to contribute to and shape the future of health research in their communities.
The scholarship is open to students within all programs within the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing, and related fields such as Psychological Science and Social Work.

Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you will need to:
- Be an enrolled student at the University of Newcastle.
- Have completed your first year of your program (80 units for undergraduate) or have commenced a post graduate program in a College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing program or a health-related field.
- Be intending to study on a full-time basis (minimum 60 units per year).
- Establish your Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander status per the process outlined on the Wollotuka Institute's study with us page.
Required Documentation
Required documents will be listed on the ‘Your Documents’ page of your application. The application portal accepts PDF only. A maximum of 3 PDF smaller than 5 MB can be added per document type upload field.
- A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.
- You may be required to provide documents to support your educational challenges and personal circumstances. These will be identified when you apply based on your individual application responses.
Benefit
The scholarship provides a total benefit of $5000 for a term of one year. This is paid as $2500 over two semesters. Payments are generally made 3 weeks after the relevant semester census dates.
This scholarship provides additional opportunities to develop skills and experience in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Research. Participation will be coordinated by the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing staff. Participation is not compulsory; however applicants should have a genuine intention to engage with and benefit from this aspect of the scholarship.
Selection
Selection is a competitive process and will be based on assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents, with reference to the eligibility criteria.
Selection will be made by the Selection Panel which will consist of a minimum of three members chosen by Professor Michelle Kennedy.
