Establishment

The Dylan Alcott Foundation is committed to providing equal educational opportunities for people living with disability. Dylan Alcott AO established the Foundation with a mission to help enrich the lives of young people with disability by eliminating the barriers of entry to get involved in sport and study through mentoring, grants and scholarships.

This scholarship has been established in partnership with the University to help young Australians with disabilities gain confidence, fulfill their potential, and achieve their dreams through education.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you will need to:

  • Be enrolled in any year of an undergraduate degree with a preference for 1st year students with the University of Newcastle.
  • Be aged 26 or younger in the year of scholarship award.
  • Demonstrate that your ability to study is affected, or will be affected, by a long term medical condition/disability (please see definition in attached conditions document).
  • Demonstrate academic progress either by Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent required for entry, or a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0. If not applicable for Enabling students, enrolment will suffice to meet this criteria.
  • Be an Australian citizen, Australian Permanent Resident (includes New Zealand Permanent Residents).

Required Documentation

Required documents will be listed on the ‘Your Documents’ page of your application. The application portal accepts PDF only. A maximum of 3 PDF smaller than 5 MB can be added per document type upload field.

  • A personal statement (approx. 1 A4 page) outlining your academic achievements, career aspirations in the relevant area of study, and how this scholarship would assist you. This statement will cover all scholarships you are submitting for.
  • You may be required to provide documents to support your educational disadvantage claims. These will be identified when you apply based on your individual application responses.

Benefit

The Dylan Alcott Foundation Scholarship will be paid as tuition fees applied directly to student course fees via the University.

The Dylan Alcott Foundation Scholarship will contribute up to $10,000 towards your course fees per annum (3 years total).

In addition to the Dylan Alcott Foundation Scholarship the selected beneficiary will also be provided a $5,000 cash scholarship by the University per annum (3 years total).


Selection

Selection is a competitive process and will be based on assessment of the scholarship application and any required supporting documents, with reference to the eligibility criteria.

Selection will be made by the Multi College Selection Panel which will consist of a minimum of three members chosen by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).

Selection may give preference to eligible applicants in their first year of study.
