About the Mark Hughes Foundation

The Mark Hughes Foundation (MHF) was formed by Mark and Kirralee Hughes following Mark's own brain cancer diagnosis in 2014 when they realised how critically underfunded brain cancer research has been in Australia.

Since then, the MHF has raised millions of much needed funds to research, create awareness and support brain cancer patients and their families, carers, and supporters. Thanks to the generosity of their supporters, MHF has provided vital support for a diverse range of targeted and sustainable collaborative initiatives, including:

  • Pivotal $15 million philanthropic contribution to the University of Newcastle to establish the Mark Hughes Foundation Centre for Brain Cancer Research and dedicated research team
  • Establishment of the MHF Brain Cancer Care Coordinators Program providing vital patient-centred care, advocacy and support in regional hospitals
  • MHF brain biobank for much needed post mortem tissue to conduct research to tackle brain cancers, such as glioblastoma-multiforme
  • Ongoing nation-wide MHF Brain Cancer Innovation Grants Scheme funding millions of dollars of research each year
  • Contribution of $3 million to the Australian Brain Cancer Mission, a partnership between the Federal Government, philanthropists, medical experts, patients and their families.
