Goal 11:
Sustainable Cities and Communities
Affordable Housing for Employees
The University of Newcastle supports employees with relocation and housing facilitation measures, and salary packaging arrangements that help manage housing costs.
Information & Guidance on Local Housing
- The University offers a Relocation Brochure for staff considering moves to Newcastle. This guide includes recommendations for affordable housing areas, tips on suburbs to explore, and resources for house hunting.
- Staff relocating to the region are assisted with access to local housing market information and options to ease the transition.
Salary Packaging & Housing Support
- Through our Salary Packaging Policy, employees may salary package certain relocation expenses, including initial relocation costs, temporary accommodation, and housing‑related expenses (subject to policy eligibility).
- We maintain an agreement with LeasePlan Australia to manage the administration of salary packaging benefits.
- Staff who move from their usual place of residence to take up employment at the University may be eligible for a Living Away From Home Allowance, which can include reimbursement of relocation, rental, utility, and interest costs under certain conditions.
The University of Newcastle acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands within our footprint areas: Awabakal, Darkinjung, Biripai, Worimi, Wonnarua, and Eora Nations. We also pay respect to the wisdom of our Elders past and present.
