        Disability Support Services
In 2024, the University of Newcastle provided a dedicated and comprehensive support service for students with disability through the AccessAbility program.
The AccessAbility service supports students with a wide range of disabilities, medical conditions, mental health conditions, or injuries — whether the condition is permanent, temporary, or fluctuating. Support is also available for students who are primary carers of individuals with disability or medical conditions.
Support may include:
- Academic adjustments and Learning Access Plans (LAPs)
- Assistance with note-taking, exam arrangements, or adaptive technologies
- Coordination of interpreters or personal assistants, where required
- Access to referral services, on-campus support, and wellbeing resources
- Collaboration with teaching staff to ensure accessible learning environments
The University is committed to providing inclusive and equitable learning experiences, and the AccessAbility team works confidentially and collaboratively to remove barriers to participation. AccessAbility can provide support whether your condition is permanent, fluctuating or temporary. We also offer support if you are the primary carer of someone with a disability or medical condition.

Who is eligible for disability support?
The definition of ‘disability’ under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 is broad and includes physical, intellectual, psychiatric, sensory, neurological and learning disabilities.
Students with a disability or medical condition, as well as full-time carers, can access support systems via AccessAbility.
