Access to University: Underrepresented Groups' Recruitment

In 2024, the University of Newcastle continued to implement planned and strategic actions to recruit students and staff from under-represented groups, reflecting our institutional commitment to equity, access, and social justice.

Through the work of the Centre of Excellence for Equity in Higher Education (CEEHE), the University leads innovative research and practice that supports greater inclusion across the higher education landscape. The CEEHE collaborates closely with communities, schools, and academic units to embed equity into recruitment and participation initiatives.

The University’s Student Equity and Social Justice Plan (2020–2025) outlines comprehensive strategies and projects that support the recruitment, retention, and success of individuals from under-represented groups. These include:

  • A wide range of outreach programs, tailored to encourage participation from equity cohorts such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, students from low SES backgrounds, regional and remote students, and refugee-background communities.
  • The Yapug Program, a dedicated pathway for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, designed to develop academic skills and prepare participants for undergraduate study.
  • Collaborative partnerships with schools and community organisations to create sustainable pathways into higher education for under-represented learners.

These planned actions in 2024 were part of the University's ongoing mission to ensure equity of access, participation, and success for all.
