Publish Financial Data

The University of Newcastle includes comprehensive financial data in the 2025 Annual Report and we have provided this in each previous report. This includes audited financial statements, a financial outline, budgetary details, consolidated group results as well as parent-entity reporting. The 2025 Annual Report presents the University’s financial position and performance for the year ended 31 December 2025, making the information publicly accessible to students, staff, government and the wider community.

Independent financial reporting and accountability

The report covers the period from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2025. It was prepared for submission to the NSW Parliament in accordance with relevant legislation, including the Annual Reports (Statutory Bodies) Act 1984 and the Government Sector Finance Act 2018. The audited financial statements were presented to University Council and independently audited by the Audit Office of New South Wales.

The independent auditor’s opinion confirms that the 2025 financial statements were prepared in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards and the applicable Government Sector Finance Act 2018 and Government Sector Finance Regulation 2024 reporting requirements, and fairly present the University’s financial position, performance and cash flows.

Consolidated University Group

The financial statements for the year ended 31 December 2025 presented to the University Council have been prepared on a consolidated basis and include the results for the University of Newcastle and its controlled entities. The consolidated Group reported total revenue and income of $1,016.547 million, expenses of $903.113 million and a net surplus after tax of $112.477 million for 2025.

University parent entity and core operating result

The University also publishes separate parent-entity figures. For 2025, the parent University reported total revenue and income of $979.495 million, expenses of $875.229 million and a net surplus after tax of $104.266 million. The adjusted (core) operating result was a surplus of $15.4 million, the University’s first core operating surplus since 2021. The adjusted measure excludes items including restricted research and philanthropic funding, commercial operations and investment income, helping explain the distinction between the statutory surplus and resources available for core operations.

What the University publishes

Part Six, “Financial Performance”, of the 2025 Annual Report provides an income statement, statement of comprehensive income, statement of financial position, changes in equity, statement of cash flows, explanatory notes and the independent auditor’s report. The statements show 2025 and 2024 figures for the consolidated Group and the parent University, enabling detailed assessment of financial performance, probity and viability.

The published accounts disclose government financial assistance, student fees and charges, investment income, consulting and research-related income, operating expenditure and financial assets and liabilities. The Annual Report also includes student load, domestic and international revenue, financial and operational performance measures, significant capital works and disclosures about the University’s controlled entities, including TUNRA, NUservices Pty Ltd, Newcastle Australia Institute of Higher Education and Newcastle University Sport.

Public access and reporting continuity

The 2025 Annual Report is publicly available on the University website. The full report, financial statements and explanation of the core and consolidated results are available through the University’s original governance and reporting pages, while the previous annual reports archive provides historical financial information for comparison. The 2025 Annual Report PDF was updated on 22 May 2026 to correct a PDF conversion issue affecting the display of data on page 65.

Publishing independently audited financial information demonstrates the University’s commitment to transparent and accountable stewardship of institutional resources. The detailed 2025 results give our communities a clear view of how funding supports University operations and long-term financial sustainability.
