Education for SDGs: Specific Courses on Sustainability

The University of Newcastle offers a suite of dedicated courses, both full degrees and electives, that address sustainability and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These include programs such as the Bachelor of Coastal and Marine ScienceBachelor of Environmental Science and Management, and the Master of Environmental Management and Sustainability.

In addition, there are over 120 courses with a sustainability or SDG focus that can be taken as part of a degree or as electives. For example:

  • Sustainable Development and the 2030 Development Agenda introduce students to the guiding principles of the SDGs and their application across public, private, and not-for-profit sectors.
  • Performance of Sustainability and the Built Environment explores sustainability in architectural and urban contexts, including SDG integration.
  • The University also offers a CIFAL SDG course, developed in partnership with CIFAL Newcastle, which provides students with practical insights into implementing the SDGs within organisations and communities.

These courses ran throughout the entirety of 2024.

An increased offer of environment sustainability degrees, majors and elective courses has been added to our curriculum, and professional areas like law, engineering and architecture have also had sustainability education infused into their degrees.
