Goal 13:
Climate Action
Local Education Programmes on Climate
The University of Newcastle is deeply committed to climate education and action; we conduct a range of programmes and campaigns across the community. In 2024, we addressed the risks, impacts, mitigation strategies, adaptation, impact reduction, and early warning systems associated with climate change. We continue to give our community information, training, and skills that equip them to actively participate in a sustainable lifestyle in the face of a swiftly changing climate. Our efforts extend regionally and internationally, aiming to instruct, upskill, and prepare communities through impactful events and initiatives.
In 2024, we hosted the Climate Forum – Newcastle Watch Party at our Callaghan Campus, bringing together built-environment practitioners and community members to explore climate resilience and place-based design solutions. The event featured expert panels, keynote speakers, and interactive workshops focused on advocacy, knowledge sharing, and sustainable architectural practices. There was also the APRC Symposium: Climate Change and Humanity in the Asia Pacific Region.
We have also advanced our work under Goal 13: Climate Action, with research led by the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources (NIER), strategic collaborations through the Pacific Node, and innovation supported by the Net Zero Grand Challenge Awards. These initiatives reflect our ongoing commitment to clean energy, climate resilience, and community engagement.
