Goal 7:
Affordable and Clean Energy
Plan to Reduce Energy Consumption
The University of Newcastle has an established energy efficiency plan as part of our Environmental Sustainability Plan 2019‑2025 aimed at reducing overall energy consumption.
2024 Key Elements:
- Continuous monitoring of energy consumption by building, campus, and energy source, enabling identification of highest‑impact facilities and targeted interventions.
- The use of 100% renewable electricity supply across Newcastle and Central Coast campuses from January 2020, reducing reliance on non‑renewable energy sources supplying electricity.
- Priority governance measures including establishing a dedicated Energy Management Project Board. This board oversees development and implementation of an “Energy & Carbon Management Strategy,” which includes investigating opportunities for self‑generation of energy, battery storage, feedback to the network grid, and developing strategic relationships with energy retailers.
New Green Hydrogen Made from Solar Power & Air 1:58
In a remarkable first, a system that combines solar energy with water harvested from air has been used to manufacture low-cost green hydrogen – a zero-emissions fuel.
The University of Newcastle acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands within our footprint areas: Awabakal, Darkinjung, Biripai, Worimi, Wonnarua, and Eora Nations. We also pay respect to the wisdom of our Elders past and present.
