Affordable and Clean Energy

        Divestment Policy
The University of Newcastle has an Investment Policy in place that governs investment practices with respect to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, including carbon‑intensive industries such as oil, coal, and fossil fuels. The policy was effective from the 12th of September 2024 and was reviewed on the 3rd of March 2025. Key points are as follows:
- The University integrates ESG considerations into our investment portfolio.
- We work with external investment managers who are required to incorporate ESG factors in their investment processes.
- We measure and monitor the carbon footprint of our listed equity investments, aiming to keep that footprint below relevant market indices, consistent with our sustainability goals and in line with targets such as those in the Paris Agreement to limit global warming.
Additionally, in our Environmental Sustainability Policy, Section 3 (7): In implementing our Investment Policy we will explore opportunities for portfolio investments aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and use divestment, where possible, as a means of transitioning to a low carbon economy.

The University of Newcastle acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands within our footprint areas: Awabakal, Darkinjung, Biripai, Worimi, Wonnarua, and Eora Nations. We also pay respect to the wisdom of our Elders past and present.
