Our Presence in the Upper Hunter

The Hunter region is Australia’s largest regional economy, generating more wealth on an annual basis than Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory combined. The region also has a long history of supplying energy, resources, engineering and agriculture locally and to the world. Like many, this region is currently facing the convergence of critical challenges related to resource sustainability, energy and water security.

Despite these challenges, the Hunter continues to drive economic productivity in New South Wales and is adapting to new opportunities through diversification and innovation. Having its unique and significant advantages within the region, such as solid infrastructure, skilled workforces, lands and education, will also benefit the region to advance strongly into the future.

The strategy behind the development of integrated research and education programs at the University's Upper Hunter facility is aligned to the strategic objectives of Looking Ahead, the University of Newcastle Strategic Plan 2020-2025.

Our presence in the Upper Hunter region will service and support the economic transition of a resource-intensive region driven by innovation, and enable access to research and training through short courses and training programs.
