With five City of Newcastle Drama Awards for Best New Play under his belt, Dr. Caulfield brings his exceptional talent to this exciting project, exploring the life and work of Josef Lycett (1774-1828), a convict artist renowned for his stunning topographical views of early Australian towns and dramatic landscapes.
About the Play
"The Reformation of Joseph Lycett" invites audiences to discover the complex life of Newcastle’s convict artist. Through a blend of drama and historical context, the workshop performance explores Lycett’s transformation from a convict to a celebrated artist, revealing how he captured the essence of early Australia through his art.
The narrative delves into Lycett’s journey, examining the challenges he faced, the beauty he portrayed, and the relationships he formed, particularly with local Indigenous communities. Dr. Caulfield's meticulous research, supported by materials from the University’s Special Collections, including rare prints and engravings, enhances the storytelling, bringing historical context to the forefront.
Creative Residency
As the University of Newcastle’s Creative in Residence, Dr. Caulfield has spent six months conducting extensive research and writing, transforming his findings into a powerful performance piece. This residency, made possible by donations from the Vera Deacon Regional History Fund, underscores the University’s commitment to preserving and sharing the rich history of Newcastle and the Hunter region.
