Celebrating young sports people of our region
Two exceptional young athletes, Lainee Harrison and Brin Liddell, have been named Sports Person of the Year at the University of Newcastle Sports Awards, celebrating their outstanding achievements on the national and international stage.
The prestigious Sports Awards uphold the University’s rich sporting history and NUsport’s commitment to nurturing student-athletes to achieve excellence both on the field and in the classroom.
Sports Person of the Year – Lainee Harrison
Lainee Harrison, a proud member of the Paramatildas – Australia’s national women’s cerebral palsy football team – had a huge 2024 marked by elite international representation and incredible success on the world stage.
Throughout 2024, Lainee was selected for multiple national training camps held by Football Australia, culminating in her selection to represent Australia at the IFCPF Women’s World Cup in Salou, Spain.
Lainee scored key goals during the tournament, helping the Paramatildas achieve an undefeated run including victories over Japan, USA, Ireland, Denmark, and a second win over the USA in the final, securing the title of World Champions.
Her determination, national success, and representing Australia internationally make Lainee an inspiring ambassador for her sport and the University of Newcastle.

Sports Person of the Year – Brin Liddell
As an elite sailor, Brin Liddell competed in multiple major international sailing regattas in 2024, and is recognised among Australia’s top sailing talents.
Brin represented Australia in competitions including the Trofeo S.A.R. Princess Sofia World Cup in Spain, the Nacra 17 World Championships in France, and the European Championships in Italy, achieving top-20 finishes against the world’s best.
The highlight of his year was being part of the team representing Australia at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where he placed 13th on debut. Capping off the season with a gold medal at Sail Brisbane, he affirmed his talents on home waters.
Brin’s incredible performances on the global stage and passion for his sport have cemented his place as one of Australia’s most promising young sailors.
Lainee and Brin exemplify what it means to be a young sportsperson, dedicated to their passion and their studies. The University of Newcastle is proud to have supported them through their sporting careers as they inspire the next generation of student athletes to achieve their best.
