Aradhana finds strength in supporting others
Motivated to become a nurse after helping care for her mum, Aradhana knew she wanted to dedicate her life to supporting people when they need it most.
Determined to pursue her passion in Australia, Aradhana was drawn to Newcastle for its beaches, calm atmosphere and proximity to Sydney. The University of Newcastle’s strong international rankings sealed the deal for Aradhana, and she made the move from her home country of India. Three years later, Aradhana is graduating with a Bachelor of Nursing.
Fresh out of high school and adjusting to life in a new country, Aradhana soon realised the value of finding mentors and accessing support. So, when the opportunity arose to become an international student mentor, she eagerly embraced it.
“It’s a blessing because I feel like I’m helping my younger self who came to Australia with no knowledge and very little experience. Being that person and guiding future students in a mentoring program, I think is a great way to give it back.”
Aradhana was also a student ambassador for her program and involved with the Student Nurses and Midwives Society, through which she was a podcast convener and host.
All these experiences and dedication to her studies led to Aradhana winning the NSW International Student of the Year Award – Higher Education at the NSW International Education Awards.
“Being away from home, being away from family, and participating in various things here – all of my journey just flashed before my eyes while I was going to the stage. I never imagined I would win an award like this.
“This award is not just mine; it belongs to every person who has supported me, believed in me, and inspired me on this journey.”
Throughout her studies, Aradhana loved the opportunities to gain practical experience through her placements.
“It’s such a rewarding experience when you go out in the hospital, you meet with real life patients, and you apply all your learnings into practice. Field placements are an essential component and I really, really enjoyed them, especially with the support of the University of Newcastle.”
Aradhana completed her practical placements at John Hunter Hospital.
Aradhana also participated in the University’s iLead program which enabled her to develop her leadership skills through networking, events, and activities. Through this program, Aradhana realised she wanted to pursue leadership roles with aspirations of leading her own hospital one day.
“I know it sounds very far but that’s my dream. If you see dreams, they might come true.”
Aradhana encourages international students considering studying at the University of Newcastle to take advantage of every opportunity available to them and not to be afraid of making mistakes.
“Every opportunity I took led to a hundred more opportunities – it’s just a matter of embracing them. I really thank the University for making me feel at home, for giving me all these opportunities so that I can grow, and for putting that motivation in me so I can fulfill my dreams.”
Aradhana is looking forward to starting a graduate position in the coronary care unit at Lingard Private Hospital in early 2025.
