A graduation like no other
There is light at the end of the tunnel for 550 students who will celebrate the culmination of their studies at the University of Newcastle Callaghan graduation ceremonies this week.
In an adapted graduation format this year, five ceremonies will award undergraduate, postgraduate, and higher degree by research degrees to a cross-faculty mix of students.
A father-daughter duo who studied Nursing, a female Information Technology/Business student now working at Amazon Web Services, and a South Sudanese student from a refugee background set to become a Personal Development, Health and Physical Education teacher are among the inspiring group of world-class graduates.
University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor, Professor Alex Zelinsky AO, said he was particularly proud of this year’s cohort for their perseverance and poise while navigating the unique challenges of a global pandemic in their final year of study.
“Despite challenging times across the world, our graduating students have risen to success. Our students have demonstrated resilience and an enduring commitment to their education,” Professor Zelinsky said.
“It is inspiring to see how our community, staff and students, have rallied together to support one another.
“Although this year's graduation ceremonies won’t be celebrated at the scale of previous years, we are filled with pride for our 2020 cohort of graduates. We wish them every success for the future.”
The first of five COVID safe graduation ceremonies will commence on Monday 14 December at the Great Hall on Callaghan campus. The final ceremony will conclude on Wednesday 16 December.
