The historic first cohort of Ma & Morley Scholars visited China for an immersion experience designed to emulate Jack Ma’s life-changing first visit to Newcastle.

The group of 27 scholars had the opportunity to meet people who will inspire and inform their journey to becoming globally aware and socially conscious leaders, with visits to the Alibaba headquarters, Hangzhou Normal University and Mr Ma’s new entrepreneurial school, Hupan University.

The Ma & Morley Scholarship Program is unique to the Australian higher education sector, going beyond financial support to give students the opportunity to develop key networks and friendships; and experience practical training to equip them for leadership in the global environment. The

$26 million program has been made possible by the generous philanthropic support of the Jack Ma Foundation, its first contribution in Australia.

“Our Ma & Morley scholars were chosen based on their potential to create positive change in the world. It’s very exciting to see their journeys unfolding.” - Professor Caroline McMillen, Vice-Chancellor and President, the University of Newcastle.
