The School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Sciences at the University of Newcastle is delighted to recognise the School’s prize winners for the 2023 academic year.

Celebrating School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Science prize winners!

Students have been awarded certificates, prize money, books, and association memberships across many of HCISS’s disciplines – Ancient History, Sociology, Languages, History, Communication and Media Studies, Philosophy, Social Work and Visual Communication Design.

In a first for the School, the winner of the 2024 Karen Thrift Prize for Poetry will be announced at a Newcastle Writers Festival event, ‘Breaking Out: Student Readings’, held at Watt Space Gallery on Sunday 6 April (1pm-2pm).

Deliberations for other 2024 prizes will soon be underway.

The full list of winners and commendations for HCISS Prizes for the 2023 academic year:

  • Gemma Allan – Vivienne Llewellyn Memorial Prize – Awarded to the highest achieving 3rd year student in the Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) program
  • April Blundell-Cotterill – Douglas Ashworth Memorial Prize in Classical Civilisation (3000 Level) – Awarded annually to the student who achieves the best overall performance in upper level courses in Ancient History (minimum 30 units)
  • Ben Clifford – The Newcastle Herald Editor’s Award for Journalism – Awarded to the student completing a News Media major who demonstrated the best journalism work over their three-year degree
  • Jasmine Crouch – Kelver Hartley Prize in French – Awarded annually to the best performing students in first and second year French
  • Jessie Dennett – 2NURFM Peter Pickhover Award for Achievement in Radio Journalism – Displaying appropriate skills in news writing and news reading, clear improvement in those skills, and ongoing commitment to 2NURFM
  • Samuel Edwards – HCISS Prize in Communication (Winner) – Awarded annually to a final-year student with the highest grade point average over three years of the Bachelor of Communication program
  • Holly Fishlock – 2NURFM Peter Pickhover Award for Achievement in Radio Journalism – Displaying appropriate skills in news writing and news reading, clear improvement in those skills, and ongoing commitment to 2NURFM
  • Olivia Goeldner – 2NURFM Peter Pickhover Award for Achievement in Radio Journalism – Displaying appropriate skills in news writing and news reading, clear improvement in those skills, and ongoing commitment to 2NURFM
  • Madeleine Greer – Spectrum Comms Prize – Awarded annually to the student with the highest result in subject CMNS2140 – Principles of Public Relations
  • Gemma Hawkins – HCISS Prize in Communication (Highly Commended) – Awarded annually to a final-year student with the highest grade point average over three years of the Bachelor of Communication program
  • Lola Haylock – Sir Edward Parry Memorial Prize – Awarded annually to the student who achieves best performance in first year Philosophy course
  • Madeleine Hook – Kelver Hartley Prize in French – Awarded annually to the best performing students in first and second year French

  1. 2NURFM Peter Pickhover Award for Excellence in Radio Journalism – Displaying appropriate skills in news writing and news reading, clear improvement in those skills, and ongoing commitment to 2NURFM
  2. Melinda Moore Memorial Award 2023 – Awarded annually to the student who has contributed most to the Bachelor of Communication program
  • Samuel Jenkins – Lois Bryson Prize for Excellence in Sociology at Undergraduate Level – Awarded annually to a student completing their degree, with the best performance in SOCS3200
  • Alison Jones – The Emma Bullen Prize for Excellence in Professional Practice Skills – Awarded to the student with the highest mark in the Interpersonal Skills for Professional Practice course within the Social Work degree
  • Yana Kaneva – Katie Reinikka Memorial Prize (Highly Commended) – Awarded annually to the student with the highest grade point average over three years of the Bachelor of Visual Communication Design degree
  • Charlotte Lawrence – HCISS Prize in Communication (Highly Commended) – Awarded annually to a final-year student with the highest grade point average over three years of the Bachelor of Communication program
  • Ruby Mitchell – Sarah Wheeler Prize for 1000 Level History – Awarded annually to the student with the highest mark in a 1000 level History course
  • Katy O’Leary – Katie Reinikka Memorial Prize (Winner) – Awarded annually to the student with the highest grade point average over three years of the Bachelor of Visual Communication Design degree
  • Kendall Park – The John Robertson AM Honours Award in Ancient History and Classical Languages – Awarded to a student enrolled in Honours in the discipline of Ancient History and the Classical Languages. The award will be given to a student selected on the basis of merit and/or need, chosen by members of the Discipline of AH & CL.
  • Benjamin Patterson – TASA Prize for Excellence in Sociology at 1000 Level – Awarded annually to the student with the highest aggregate mark in SOCA1010 Society and Culture: A Sociological Introduction
  • Lone Petersen – Kelver Hartley Prize in French – Awarded annually to the best performing students in first and second year French
  • Olivia Playfoot – Goethe Prize in German Studies – Awarded annually to the student gaining the highest mark in a 3000 Level German course provided that the student does not have an unfair advantage on account of their German origin
  • Bailey Radcliffe – 2NURFM Peter Pickhover Award for Excellence in Media Production – Outstanding innovative contribution to 2NURFM, and ongoing commitment to media production at 2NURFM
  • Sarah Scott – Katie Reinikka Memorial Prize (Highly Commended) – Awarded annually to the student with the highest grade point average over three years of the Bachelor of Visual Communication Design degree
  • Siobhan Snedden – Kelver Hartley Prize in French – Awarded annually to the best performing students in first and second year French
  • Jasmine Brianna Sullivan – University of Newcastle Establishment Group Prize – Awarded annually to the student in the Faculty of Education & Arts who submits the best Honours thesis which links the course in which the Honours studies are being taken to an aspect of historical analysis or methodology

  1. Bart Roos Memorial Prize in Classical Civilisation – Awarded annually to the student who achieves the best result in any 1000 level Ancient History course
  2. Duo Cives Award in Classics – Annually awarded to the student with the best performance or the most improved performance in Latin or Ancient History, any year
  3. Sarah Wheeler Prize for 3000 Level History – Awarded annually to the student with the highest mark in a 3000 level History course

  1. James King Memorial Prize in Greek – Awarded annually to the student with the best performance in a Level 2000 or 3000 Greek History course
  2. Murray Gordon Ward Memorial Prize – Awarded to the student with the best overall performance in the area of mythology
  3. William Coleborne Memorial Prize in Greek – Awarded annually to the student with the best performance in Classical Greek language or literature
  • Joel Wootten – The Association of Graduates of the University of Newcastle Prize in Philosophy – Awarded annually to the student who achieves the best performance across all Philosophy courses, with a total of twenty credit points when completed in a single academic year
