Presented at the Prosperity Advisers 2026 Newcastle Hospitality & Tourism Awards on 18 May, the award celebrates students who demonstrate strong commitment and potential within the industry.

A final-year student in the Bachelor of Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management, Mabel was selected as the top-performing student across the program’s second-year core courses in 2025 — a critical stage where students begin applying their learning in real-world industry contexts.

Program Convenor Dr Alana Thomson said the award recognises students who are developing the skills needed to transition into their careers.

“Mabel’s performance reflects a strong commitment to learning and a growing capability to contribute meaningfully to the tourism and hospitality sector,” Dr Thomson said.

Newcastle Tourism Industry Group Chair Dominic May said the award highlights students who are demonstrating exceptional dedication to their future in the industry.

“Mabel is clearly going above and beyond, and this recognition reflects the effort she is putting into building a future in the tourism and hospitality industry,” he said.

Mabel has developed a strong interest in digital and destination marketing, shaped through her studies and industry experience, including an internship with the Hunter Valley Wine and Tourism Association.

“It was the first time everything I was learning at university really fell into place,” she said. “I could see how my studies connected directly to industry, which reassured me that I was heading in the right direction.”

Alongside her studies, Mabel has also secured a role with the University’s events team, supporting student initiatives such as orientation and graduation.

Reflecting on the award, she said the recognition validates the effort she has invested in her studies.

“It’s a really nice feeling to know you’re on the right track. It’s definitely a confidence boost and recognition of the hard work that goes on behind the scenes,” she said.

Mabel is currently completing the final year of her degree and exploring graduate opportunities in digital and destination marketing, with a focus on building a career in the tourism industry.
