Applications open for the University's new Research Excellence Fellowship program
The University of Newcastle has opened applications for the first cohort of its new Research Excellence Fellowships program, in an effort to attract and support national and international research talent and boost our overall research performance.
The University has committed $10 million in new funding over five years to support the program, with three rounds of recruitment planned across 2026 and 2027. Applications for the first cohort are open until 13 April 2026.
Up to six fellowships will be awarded in the first round, with successful applicants joining one of nine University research centres or programs.
Interim Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation Professor Juanita Todd said the Research Excellence Fellowship Program is designed to help accelerate innovation, excellence and impact while also strengthening established and high-performing teams.
The new fellowship program is an important investment in the future of our research. It will help us attract high-calibre talent from Australia and overseas, so we can deliver even greater impacts for our communities."
Successful fellows will receive a fully funded three-year fixed-term appointment, with a possible fourth year subject to performance. They will also receive one-off startup funding of $50,000 to advance research linked to the chosen research centre or program.
Fellows will be expected to:
- conduct research of national and international standing
- produce high-quality research outputs
- pursue and secure competitive external research funding
- mentor HDR candidates
- engage successfully with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
Details about the nine participating research centres and programs are on the University website, along with eligibility and application advice.
Applications for the first cohort close on 13 April, 2026.
