Local educators level up with Google-funded 'iSTEM Zero-to-Hero' PD at the University of Newcastle
This term, the University of Newcastle hosted teachers and support staff from local schools for a STEM-focussed professional development (PD) – “iSTEM Zero-to-Hero”.
The PD, hosted by engineering education researchers from the College of Engineering, Science and Environment and funded by Google Australia, provided practical training in CAD modelling, 3D printing, CNC, coding, circuits, and Arduino – the essential building blocks for success in delivering the NSW iSTEM elective.
14 teachers and support staff representing the Science, Mathematics, and TAS disciplines from 10 local schools joined Dr Alexander Gregg, Dr Dylan Cuskelly, and Mr Jaryd Giesen for six intensive, hands-on, evening sessions, learning to use and teach these technologies and gaining access to resources and a community of practice to support them in delivering this to their students.
The PD runs alongside a concurrent research study into the capabilities of STEM educators in NSW and their access to makerspace equipment.
