Yirru-gu-wi-yay-irri: An opera about birds with children

This Live Performance event will be held on Friday 6 November 2026 from 5:00pm - 6:00pm

A mixed-media bird artwork made from feathers, yarn, fabric, and drawing materials is displayed on brown paper, featuring a long blue tail, colourful textured body, and a large decorative eye.

You are invited to a special showing of a bird opera created by children and inspired by local Aboriginal stories.

This is the culmination of workshops with University of Newcastle staff and students working with Rutherford, Heaton and Jesmond Public schools and culturally guided by Dr Ray Kelly.

The children have created a story, songs and dances to tell the story of the little Durrmba-tayi, the pardalote and their aspirations.

The opera is on November 6 at the Conservatorium of Music, Auckland St at 5:00pm and will be followed by a chance to chat with the cast and organisers with refreshments.
