The Event

This one-day workshop brings together young researchers (PhD candidates and early career researchers) working in the intersecting fields of imperial and transnational history, racism and studies of violence. The programme will feature two expert speakers and three sessions focusing on a selection of questions and topics given by a pre-circled reading list.

Contributors will briefly present on their research areas followed by session focused discussions that aim to unearth common themes and connections between individual projects, theories and frameworks. In preparation for the workshop, participants are expected to submit a short paper (2,000–3,000 words) addressing the workshop themes and to read selected articles to be provided by the organisers in the lead-up to the event.

The expert speakers will be:

  • Prof. Lyndall Ryan (University of Newcastle): Race, Violence and Empire.
  • Dr. Kit Candlin (University of Newcastle): Slavery, Violence and the Atlantic World.
