Lessons for the Hunter from the EU’s Green Deal
An image of a power station
The world is moving rapidly towards a carbon neutral future and the Hunter – one of Australia’s oldest and most productive mining regions – is preparing for the transition.
Among the first movers is the European Union and its Green Deal, passed by the European Parliament in 2020. The EU Green Deal aims to establish Europe as the first climate neutral continent by 2050. Underpinning the Green Deal is the European Climate Law – the binding legislative framework for the delivery of their commitments.
What can the Hunter and Australia learn from the EU’s ambitious model – the Green Deal – to transition to a carbon neutral future? And what insights can we share about our own experiences with our European counterparts?
The University of Newcastle’s Institute for Regional Futures is partnering with KAS Australia and the ANU Centre for European Studies to host a discussion with members of the European Parliament on the way forward to a carbon neutral future.
Please join us for this important conversation with a focus on how the rule of law should be shaped to support our transition.
Speaking at the seminar will be:
- Hildegard Bentele, Member of the European Parliament (joining online)
- Scott Wyatt, Advisor – Energy, Environment, Fisheries, Forestry, Delegation of the European Union to Australia
- Bertil Wenger, Director, KAS Regional Programme - Australia & the Pacific
- Anne McNaughton, Director, ANU Centre for European Studies, The Australian National Universiy
- Warrick Jordan, Coordinator, Hunter Jobs Alliance
The seminar will be facilitated by the Institute for Regional Future's Executive Director Professor Roberta Ryan
