In this seminar I will examine current understanding of health related physical activity, and what this means for how we should be measuring it. Where does light activity fit in? Do all health benefits occur at the same dose of activity? Details will include accelerometer interpretation for GeneActiv records using GGIR.
Dr Ben Ewald is a general practice researcher with a primary interest in physical activity as primary and tertiary prevention. The recently completed NHMRC-funded NewCoach trial tested the effectiveness of referral of sedentary patients to exercise physiologists. He has expertise in the measurement of physical activity using pedometers and accelerometers, and his use of pedometers in the Hunter Community Study made it the first large cohort in the world to have an objective measure of physical activity. His continued involvement in direct patient care gives him close contact with GP colleagues which is essential to ensuring that research questions pursued are of interest and relevance to patient care.
