The impact of TV on children's intake during meals & parental influences on children's TV viewing
Associate Professor Teresia O'Connor
Baylor College of Medicine, Texas, USA
TV viewing has been associated with obesity among children and two studies will be presented to further investigate the associated pathways and contributors. The first study used observed meal data to assess the influence that having a TV on during meals has on children's caloric intake. The second study explored parental outcome expectations for allowing children to watch TV as one potential contributor to restrictive TV parenting practices and amount viewed by children.
Dr O'Connor is a practicing pediatrician and behavioral researcher at Baylor College of Medicine. Her research focuses on identifying strategies to best prevent and treat childhood obesity and better understand how parents influence their children's obesity-related behaviors. She has helped develop survey scales to assess parenting practices in the context of physical activity and feeding and used behavioural theories to better understand how parents and the neighbourhood influence young children's physical activity and screen media use.
