The Russia-Ukraine War: Contemporary Developments and Challenges

Join us for a webinar on the recent developments and challenges linked to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The panel discussion comprises experts working on and researching aspects connected to the armed conflict. The panellists will discuss issues connected to:

(i) the recent case initiated by Ukraine at the International Court of Justice (ICJ): Allegations of Genocide under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Ukraine v. Russian Federation)

(ii) accountability efforts for the alleged international crimes committed during the Russia-Ukraine war from an international criminal law and Ukrainian domestic legal perspective.

Panellists: 

Anton Korynevych - Dr. Anton Korynevych is a Ukrainian lawyer specializing in public international law, international humanitarian and international criminal law. He is the Agent of Ukraine before the International Court of Justice in the Allegations of Genocide under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (Ukraine v Russian Federation) (since February 2022). He was the Former Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.

Juliette McIntyre - Juliette is a recipient of the Law Foundation of South Australia Fellowship, and has extensive litigation experience in public international law, including before the International Court of Justice. Her research focuses primarily on public international law, particularly international courts and tribunals.

Gaiane Nuridzhanian - Dr. Gaiane Nuridzhanian is an Associate Professor at National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in Ukraine and a postdoctoral research fellow at UiT-Arctic University of Norway. Dr Nuridzhanian specialises in human rights law, international criminal law and settlement of international disputes. She has previously worked as a lawyer at the Council of Europe and the European Court of Human Rights and as a Visiting Legal Professional at the International Criminal Court.

Aloka Wanigasuriya - Dr. Aloka Wanigasuriya is Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Centre for Law and Social Justice at the Newcastle Law School, University of Newcastle (Australia) and a current visiting researcher at the Center for European and Comparative Legal Studies at the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen (Denmark). Aloka's current research focuses on accountability avenues for alleged atrocity crimes committed during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Aloka's former PhD project investigated the impact of the International Criminal Court in Ukraine and Georgia. Their research interests lie within the fields of international criminal justice and public international law.
