Compensation owed to Afghan victims of Alleged Australian War Crimes

This event was held on Friday 28 April 2023

The 2020 Brereton Report found credible information of war crimes committed by the ADF in Afghanistan between 2005 – 2016, including evidence of unlawful murders and incidents of cruel treatment. The Report recommended immediate compensation be paid to surviving family members. Despite this, there has been no legal recognition of wrongdoing by Australia or compensation paid.

Join the Centre for Law and Social Justice, for an engaging webinar exploring the reality of the legal, practical, and logistical issues in constructing state compensation schemes for war crimes. This webinar will explore legal problem solving, victim advocacy, and the tension between international and domestic law. We will be joined by Fiona Nelson, Director of Legal Advocacy at the Australian Centre for International Justice (ACIJ) and Daniela Gavshon, Australian Director of Human Rights Watch. The event will be chaired by the Centre’s Research Assistant, Arielle Cirillo.
