Out of Home Care Public Lecture

Professor Claire Cameron is visiting the University of Newcastle in April and a public lecture is being held to explore the UK context of students from an out of home care (OOHC) background accessing higher education.
From care to education: What can Australia learn from the UK?
Who are care leavers and how do they fare in education in England and other European countries? This lecture will assess the current state of knowledge about young people leaving care and what supports them in education.
It will examine care leavers pathways through further and higher education from a cross-national project and will offer some explanations for the outcomes from care, drawing on social policy and social work. It will then give an account of some factors that support successful higher education for care leavers and describe some current issues, initiatives and programmes for this group.
Professor Cameron will argue that policy and provision for care leavers has failed to keep pace with changes in expectations and responsibilities for young people living in or leaving home from their own families, and that there is a conceptual ambiguity about societal responsibility for, and so continuing education of, care leavers as they enter adulthood.
Claire Cameron is Professor of Social Pedagogy at UCL Institute of Education, London, where she has been researching issues of care, social pedagogy, gender, the children’s workforce plus early childhood education and care for over two decades. View her full biography.
This lecture is open to staff, students and community and is being hosted by the Centre of Excellence for Equity in Higher Education.
