Art for a Few: Exclusions and Misrecognitions in Art & Design Higher Education Admissions
Presented by Professor Penny Jane Burke (Co-Director Centre of Excellence for Equity in Higher Education) and Jackie McManus (University of the Arts, London).
This seminar presents Professor Burke and Ms McManus' research on admissions practices, tracing the detailed processes of decision-making and selection in Art and Design courses across five British higher education institutions.
The research involved analysis of policy texts on admissions, interviews with admissions tutors as well as 70 observations of actual selection interviews. The framing context for the research is widening participation and equity policy and practice, and more specifically policy debates about fair and transparent admissions practices.
The seminar presents an analysis of the data to illuminate the workings of complex, subtle and insidious inequalities in selection practices. Drawing on the concept of 'misrecognition' to shed light on selection practices and discourses of 'potential', Professor Burke and Ms McManus will also discuss the key recommendations emerging from the project.
A light lunch will be provided on the day.
