Stepping into the Spotlight: Researchers Share Their Media Journey

Curious about how academics turn their research into media‑ready stories — or how they survived their first live interview? Join us for a candid and practical conversation with four researchers who’ve done it all: TV, radio, print, online media and writing for The Conversation.
Laureate Professor Clare Collins, Associate Professor Hedda Askland, Dr Ryan Witt and Dr Jake MacDonald will share the real stories behind their media experiences — the nerves, the mistakes, the breakthroughs and the unexpected opportunities that came from stepping into the public eye. Moderated by Media and Communications Specialist Gemma Wolk, the panel will explore how visibility can help shape a research career, how to build confidence, and how to start small without feeling overwhelmed.
From 3.00–3.30pm, the University’s Media Team will stick around to offer practical tips, answer questions and help you understand the support available to HDRs who want to build their public profile.
Whether you’re media‑curious or ready to take the next step, this session will give you the tools, insights and encouragement to share your research with the world.
