In conversation with the Hon. Kevin Rudd AC

This event was held on Tuesday 22 November 2022

The University of Newcastle's Asia Pacific Research Centre and the Newcastle Institute hosted a special public lecture and conversation with The Honourable Kevin Rudd AC, the 26th Prime Minister of Australia on Tuesday, November 22, 2022.

The event took place at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music, University of Newcastle, on the corner of Laman Street and Auckland St, Newcastle. The lecture was part of the inaugural Asia Pacific Centre-Newcastle Institute Lecture series.

During the lecture, Dr Rudd explored themes from his latest book, The Avoidable War: The Dangers of a Catastrophic Conflict between the US and Xi Jinping's China. Dr Rudd analysed the factors that lay beneath the volatile relationship between China and the United States and its allies, including Australia, and discussed ways these tensions could be controlled without spiralling into crisis, confrontation, and conflict.

Dr Rudd served as Australia's twenty-sixth prime minister from 2007 to 2010 and then as its foreign minister from 2010 to 2012, before returning as prime minister in 2013. He is the global president and CEO of Asia Society and was the president of the Asia Society Policy Institute from January 2015. Dr Rudd graduated from the Australian National University with honours in Chinese studies and was fluent in Mandarin. He also studied at the National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei.
