Join us for a week of Open Access events from Monday, the 24th, to Friday, the 28th of October.

Open access (OA) means free access to information and unrestricted use of electronic resources for everyone. This year’s Open Access Week theme is “Open for Climate Justice”, which seeks to encourage connection and collaboration among the climate movement and the international open community. Have a look at the Library’s Open Access events below.

You can also see a complete list of all international Open Access Week events, or see our Open Access Guide if you want to learn more about Open Access and how it can benefit you.

Escape room competition

Enter the Climate Change quest by unlocking 10 (virtual) escape rooms. This quest will teach you more about what Open Access is and how to identify open-access resources on climate change. All successful entrants go into the draw to win a Yardsale Trading Co Eco Gift Pack valued at $350.

The Escape Room will be open on Monday, the 24th of October and close on Friday, the 28th of October. E-mail OAWeek2022@newcastle.edu.au with your student/staff e-mail to request access.

Special Collections interview - Belfield Climate Archive

Watch this interview with University of Newcastle Archivist Gionni Di Gravio, OAM, where he will discuss the challenges and lessons learnt from a project to make a set of climate records rediscovered on a property in the New England District of regional Australia openly available to all. Created by 19th-century pastoralist Algernon Belfield, the records are now openly accessible to scientists around the world, to understand the Earth's climate.

The video will be released on Monday, 24th of October, on Hunter Living Histories.

Library Webinar on Open Educational Resources (OER)

We have adapted this year's theme, 'Open for climate justice,' to showcase Open Educational Resources (OER) as instruments of social justice.

Find out how you can offer your students low-cost, interactive, locally relevant course readings and texts – or just join us to find out how Open Education Resources make the world a better place.

Tuesday, 25 October 10am-11am. Register for the Library’s OER webinar.

Open Access Hackathon

Get your hands (figuratively) dirty to help the planet!

The Open Access Week hackathon will bring staff and students together to collaborate and create a guide to resources on climate science and climate justice with a local focus.

Join the team on Tuesday, 25 October, for the first of the two events that will bookend the hackathon, where the team will explain what open educational resources (OERs) are, where to find them, and how we’ll collaborate over the course of OA Week to create our guide.

Contribute as much or as little as you like across the week, and then on Friday, 28 October, we’ll get together to see what we’ve made, tidy things up and get ready to publish it.

Join in with other University of Newcastle OER hackers at Auchmuty Library, Room L326 or join us online.

To join the hackathon, register for both sessions using the links below. You’ll receive an email from the team ahead of the first event with a link to resources to help you during the hackathon.

Register for Part 1: Tuesday, 25 October, 10 am.

Register for Part 2: Friday, 28 October, 10 am.
