Law and Religion - Litigation involving churches in NSW

This event was held on Friday 26 August 2016

The question of legal responsibility of churches is a pressing issue in many areas. As well as touching on important liability and property decisions, such as the Ellis case and recent decisions concerning the Bathurst diocese, the lecture will discuss cases where the courts have been asked to adjudicate on internal religious doctrines.

Keith Mason AC QC Hon LLD has been a solicitor, barrister, law reformer, solicitor-general, president of the New South Wales Court of Appeal, law teacher and mediator. He has been the Chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of Armidale for many years and is currently the President of the Appellate Tribunal of the Anglican Church of Australia. He has written books and articles on topics including restitution, equity, judicial method, taxonomy in the law and the interface of law and morality.

The lecture is part of an elective on “Law and Religion” taught in Newcastle Law School to later year law students. The School is extending an invitation to members of the legal profession, and other interested members of the public, to hear this distinguished guest speaker address these important issues.

If this lecture extends your knowledge and skills in areas that are relevant to your professional development and practice of law then you can claim the activity for CPD units. http://www.lawsociety.com.au/cs/groups/public/documents/internetregistry/1055953.pdf
