Professor Penny Jane Burke takes global steps as UNESCO Chair to address equity, social justice, and access to higher education for all.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation is a specialised agency of the United Nations, with Chairs appointed to create a network by partnering with institutions across the globe to address pressing challenges, reduce inequalities and improve equitable access to education.

In the first in-depth public presentation in her new role as UNESCO Chair in Equity, Social Justice and Higher Education, Professor Penny Jane Burke will speak to the urgent call from UNESCO to examine and reimagine the role of higher education as a vehicle for social justice.

Through an ambitious and collaborative program of work over the next four years, the UNESCO Chair will foster and extend Newcastle partnership with Ghana, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the Asia Pacific region. A primary focus will be to develop new knowledge to understand how gender inequities manifest in gender-based violence to profoundly impact educational access and participation for victim-survivors. A hub will be developed to create innovative strategies for post-crisis pathways to lifelong learning and higher education, drawing on diverse expertise across research and practice.

Professor Burke will consider how higher education can be mobilised for social transformation and will discuss the program of work to illustrate how this might be translated to practice.

The urgencies of our time are a matter for higher education. This includes the growing inequalities that undermine the potential contribution of communities and people to participate in generating knowledge and practices for sustainable futures.
