The Big Picture Fest Masterclass: Creating art for purpose

As part of the University of Newcastle’s partnership with The Big Picture Fest we are excited to announce our upcoming masterclass, Creating Art for Purpose. We will be welcoming two of our Alumni artists, Jasmine Craciun and Brett Piva to join us for a virtual session where they will each discuss their creative processes, past projects and touch on their intended work for the Big Picture Fest. The workshop will be followed by Q&A.

Jasmine Craciun
Jasmine Craciun is a proud Barkindji, Malyangapa woman who’s grown up in Newcastle. Craciun has always had a love of art and design and she graduated with distinction from a Bachelor of Visual Communication Design at The University of Newcastle in 2018. Craciun prides herself on designing for today’s diverse audience and understanding what is needed to communicate with unique groups of people. She believes design should be used to enact change.
Brett Piva
A contemporary artist and curator based in Newcastle, Brett Piva completed a Bachelor of Visual Communication Design at the University of Newcastle in 2004. Piva’s beginnings started in a rural setting connecting to the Murrumbidgee River. Relocating to an urban environment, his affection for ‘The Australian Bush’ grows stronger by the day. The contrast within the triumph and tragedy of these ever-changing environments are present within Piva’s work. To reflect on these experiences, Piva uses abstract reverse painting techniques with gold leaf and enamel on glass within paintings, timber and glass sculptural pieces along with large scale murals.
About the Big Picture Fest
The Big Picture Fest is coming to our streets, and your screens, live on the weekend of 2 - 4 October 2020. This major international street art activation will celebrate Newcastle’s history and creative culture, bringing together world class artists to work alongside our amazing local talent on large scale murals in the city.
Artists Jasmine Craciun and Brett Piva will both be creating large scale murals as part of the Big Picture Fest.
