Sketch drawing of Shakespeare

Can Shakespeare help us to understand contemporary politics? This is the question that John Bell, Founding Artistic Director of Bell Shakespeare, will address in this lecture streamed live from Government House in Sydney.

As part of the Ideas@theHouse series, John will explore a range of works, Tragedies, Histories and even Comedies reflecting on how these ideas resonate today and considering their potential to make sense of increasingly urgent global challenges.

John Bell is one of Australia’s most acclaimed artists who has played a pivotal role in the development of Australian theatre. The Bell Shakespeare Company began in 1990 with the aim of bringing the works of Shakespeare, performed by Australians, to Australian audiences. The Company has performed many dozens of Shakespeare’s works, with John very often taking lead roles, and takes the works of Shakespeare to schools and communities throughout Australia.

Join us in the Q Building to hear this talk streamed live from Government House. Hosted by Associate Professor of English and Writing Trisha Penderthe lecture will be followed by a facilitated discussion. Trisha is a leading scholar of Early Modern literature with particular expertise in women’s writing.
