Representation, Resistance & the Digiqueer - Book Launch and Discussion

This event was held on Wednesday 7 May 2025

Book Launch

LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities can have an ambivalent relationship with digital technology. As more frequent users of digital platforms for friendship and intimacy, they can also have an increased likelihood of experiencing discrimination online. This contradictory connectivity has come into sharper focus in recent years with a general increase in hostility against LGBTQIA+ individuals and community initiatives through threats online, and in-person.

This event brings together key speakers to discuss these vital issues, and to launch Dr Justin Ellis’ second monograph Representation, Resistance and the Digiqueer: Fighting for Recognition in Technocratic Times (Bristol 2023), which documents and analyses the complex relationship between technology and LGBTQIA+ identity.

Please join Romany Brooks (MC), the NSW member for Sydney the Hon Alex Greenwich, Senior Advisor, Equality Australia, and Chair TransEquality Teddy Cook, and Dr Justin Ellis, Criminology Senior Lecturer at the University of Newcastle School of Law of Justice for this important discussion.

This book launch and panel discussion is cosponsored by the University of Newcastle Centre for the Study of Violence, and the University of Newcastle Centre for Law and Social Justice.
