Please join us for a lecture by the Hon. Michael Kirby titled: Love v The Commonwealth on the topic of the rights of indigenous Or First Nations Peoples under the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia

The Hon. Michael Kirby served as a justice of the High Court of Australia (1996-2009). Before that he was president of the NSW Court of Appeal (1984-96); judge of the Federal Court of Australia (1983-4); and chairman of the Australian Law Reform Commission (1975-84).
He has been active in many United Nations and international activities. He was president of the International Commission of Jurists (1995-8); UN Special Representative on Cambodia (1993-6); Chair of the UN Commission of Inquiry on North Korea (2013-14); and currently serves as co-chair of the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute (2018-). In 1978-83, he served as a member of the Council of the University of Newcastle and as Deputy-Chancellor of the University. He was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters by the University of Newcastle. When serving on the High Court, he appointed Mr Ross Abbs, graduate of the University of Newcastle to be his associate (2007-8) and regularly visits Newcastle which has made him an Ambassador to the City.
