A strategic partnership

The University of Newcastle and Nihon University have partnered with the aim of creating new avenues for collaboration.

Our partnership

The partnership between the University of Newcastle and Nihon University reflects a dynamic and evolving collaboration that connects education, culture, and place. Formalised through a strategic agreement, the partnership focuses on expanding opportunities in teaching, research, and student engagement, underpinned by a shared commitment to global learning and cross-cultural exchange.

This partnership is brought to life through tangible initiatives, including the establishment of Nihon University’s Newcastle campus, the only Japanese university with a campus in Australia, creating a unique platform for immersive global education. Students from Japan engage in intensive programs, language learning, and cultural experiences in Newcastle, while joint initiatives such as the Cross-Cultural Buddy Program have connected hundreds of students, fostering lasting relationships and intercultural capability.

Beyond mobility, the partnership supports ongoing academic exchange, delegation visits, and the co-development of new opportunities that strengthen research capability and institutional ties. It is a partnership grounded in action, where shared investment and physical presence translate into meaningful student experiences, deeper engagement, and a sustained connection between Australia and Japan.

In February 2024, Newcastle welcomed the first two Nihon University student study groups to complete intensive English classes at the Language Centre at Callaghan campus and enjoy local tours and excursions including the Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club.

Throughout the 2021 and 2022 pandemic over 150 students from the University of Newcastle and Nihon University participated in an online Cross-Cultural Buddy program. The aim of the program was to promote cross cultural connection and language skills at a time when students could not travel. The University of Newcastle has a strong Japanese language student cohort and Japanese/Australian student club, and students enthusiastically took up the opportunity to make new friends and learn more about the culture. The feedback from students was very positive, with many returning to participate a second or third time and many buddies remaining in contact after the program concluded. Japan continues to be a popular destination for our Semester Exchange students and the student-to-student relationships created on this program support the continued linkages between our two universities.
