Uni Crew Student Volunteering

Uni Crew is the University of Newcastle's student volunteering program.

Being a volunteer isn’t just a wonderful way of helping the University and broader community, it’s also a terrific benefit to yourself – both personally and professionally. Volunteering provides opportunities to make new friends, create opportunities to diversify your university experience outside the classroom, as well as engage in a variety of activities, initiatives, and events on and off campus.

The Benefits

Here are just some of the other great benefits you'll receive by signing up to Uni Crew:
  • We'll provide you with a free volunteering kit to ensure you start your Uni Crew journey in style! Shirt, hat, drink bottle, and bag are all provided.
  • You will develop important employability skills that will prove invaluable as you branch out into the workforce.
  • Once you complete a set number of hours, we will provide you with a reference. We can also connect you with the  Careers Service so that you can learn how to highlight the value of your experiences in job applications and interviews.
  • Your volunteering hours will be noted on your Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS) when you graduate.

If there is something you’re passionate about, then we want to know! Whether you’re an eco-warrior or a movie buff or you just want to get out there and meet as many different people as possible, then we’ve got a volunteering opportunity for you!

Types of Opportunities

You can choose from a range of volunteering options - both in the University and wider community.

Here are just some examples of the kinds of things you can get involved with as a volunteer on-campus:

  • Welcome new students as part of the Orientation team at the start of each semester – taking guided tours and providing a friendly welcoming face
  • Assist at Graduation ceremonies to help deliver an outstanding experience for those students who have finished their studies
  • Provide support and opportunities as part of Stress Less, including snack runs, BBQs, and animal petting zoos
  • Help out at gigs and parties by greeting and wrist-banding party goers (plus you then get to stay and have a good time!)
  • And more!

We connect students with a range of volunteering opportunities in the community. Some examples include:

  • Soul Café - Volunteers are given the chance to give their valuable time to those most vulnerable in the Newcastle community. You can work with other dedicated volunteers from outside the University to serve lunch, meet new people and bring a little joy to those who could use it!
  • Newcastle Show – Volunteer for a variety of roles during the annual Newcastle show. This can include assisting at the entrance, working with animals, wayfinding or helping guests, and more. Plus, as a thank you, you receive free tickets to check it out yourself!
  • The Big Picture Fest – Volunteers are the key to making the Big Picture Fest a success and each year. Over one week, you can learn about local artists and showcase some amazing street art to the community.
  • And more!
