Additional learning activities

While the Department of Rural Health does not employ an academic staff member in this discipline, we can ensure you’re connected with all the opportunities that come with doing a placement with us, including community engagement activities, free job webinars, interdisciplinary learning activities, access to our regional university facilities and more.

Some of our social work placement sites include:

• Manning Base Hospital (acute inpatients)
• Taree Aged Care and Rehabilitation Services (community adult service)
• Taree Transitional Aged Care service – post acute community rehabilitation service
• Port Macquarie Base Hospital (outpatient, acute patients, community OT for paediatrics, adult and mental health)
• Armidale Mental Health Services
• Local community services within the area

Valuable community experience

A rural placement gives you valuable community-based experience within a multidisciplinary team, professional connections for your future, and a taste of rural practice. Social work students can participate in a range of community activities, such as working with Indigenous communities or participating in teddy bear hospitals with primary school students.

Funding support

You may be entitled to a scholarship or grant to assist your studies. To find out more, talk with your university on application.

How to apply

University of Newcastle students can nominate their placement location preferences  through your university’s placement management system. Once you have been allocated to a location within our NSW geographical footprint, you will need to register with us via our placement portal to access community activities and accommodation support.
