Software Engineering - Pre-2023

Industrial experience is an opportunity to gain valuable hands-on training and experience in real world situations. Additionally, through exposure to current practice, students can reflect on, and appreciate the link between curriculum and practice.  12 weeks of Industrial Experience is a requirement for graduation.

Students are responsible for securing their own placement or a similar external activity for this course. Before approaching companies or organisations, consult your Course Coordinator to ensure the placement aligns with University guidelines, does not interfere with existing placement activities or courses, and is appropriate. Each student must also have a designated placement supervisor within the host organisation.

The Career-Ready Placement online portal provides access to job vacancies, application and interview resources, and feedback on draft applications. It also offers:

  • Step-by-step guidance on sourcing your own placement
  • Job search strategy guidance
  • Resume and application reviews through drop-in sessions and appointments
  • Interview preparation services

To increase your chances of finding the right placement you should also join the accrediting professional bodies of your degree (many of which offer free student memberships), go to professional networking events and build relationships with the contacts you make, attend career fairs and most importantly, don't give up!

You can find a list of  the companies that may be able to assist with your Industrial Experience at Engineers Australia - The Engineering Directory

To assist companies to gain an understanding of the requirements of hosting a student, we recommend that you provide them with a copy of the Prospective Host Factsheet.
