Respect at Uni
The Respect at Uni program lifts knowledge and capability across the University community to be able to recognise, prevent and respond to gender-based violence.
The team delivers gender-based violence prevention initiatives to students and staff, creating and maintaining safe and respectful communities and workplaces.
Our pillars
Engagement
Engagement with staff, students and the broader community is a core pillar of the Respect at Uni program.
Respect at Uni is guided by Wollotuka Institute’s Cultural Standards, which shape how we engage with our University community in meaningful, inclusive and respectful ways.
We connect with staff and students through events, consultation, feedback and review processes.
Our student events and engagement activities support awareness and prevention by providing education on consent, respectful relationships, sexual health, available support services, and support pathways such as Campus Care and Counselling.
Training and education
The University offers a range of training and learning opportunities to support the prevention of and response to gender-based violence.
Respect Matters
Respect Matters is a compulsory foundational module for all students and staff. It provides essential education around gender-based violence, consent, respectful relationships and bystander responsibility.
Other training opportunities
If you’re a staff member and would like to explore the full range of available training that supports creating safe and respectful communities and workplaces, visit the Health, Safety and Wellbeing SharePoint Intranet pages.
Our student community
Respect at Uni is built on strong engagement with our student community. By listening to and working alongside students, we strengthen our approach to preventing and responding to gender-based violence, as well building a culture of safety and respect within our university community.
Respect at Uni Peer Leaders
Our Respect at Uni Peer Leaders are a dedicated group of students committed to helping create a safe, inclusive, and respectful campus community. Trained in key areas such as consent, respectful relationships, and bystander intervention, they work to raise awareness and provide opportunities for engagement, conversation and learning with their peers.
Keep an eye out for the Respect at Uni Peer Leaders on campus. They want to hear your ideas on how we can all contribute to a safe and positive uni culture.
Lived Experience Expertise
The Lived Experience Student Consultants program brings together students who use their lived and living experiences to inform the University of Newcastle’s strategies for preventing gender-based violence.
These consultants provide valuable insights to ensure university policies, programs, and initiatives are survivor-centered and trauma-informed. Their work includes:
- Providing feedback on existing policies and programs to enhance support for survivors.
- Assisting in the creation of educational materials and resources that reflect real student experiences.
- Engaging in outreach activities to promote awareness and support within the university community.
- Evaluating respect and consent initiatives to improve their effectiveness and inclusivity.
By contributing their expertise, Lived Experience Student Consultants play a crucial role in shaping a safer, more supportive campus.
