Creating a safe and respectful community
Information and resources for staff and students.
We're committed to providing a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for staff, students and everyone across our campuses, online spaces and wider community
Gender-based violence includes any form of physical or non-physical violence, harassment, abuse or threats based on gender, that result in, or is likely to result in harm, coercion, control, fear or deprivation of liberty or autonomy. It may include sexual violence, sexual harassment, coercive control, family and intimate partner violence, dating violence, stalking, technology-facilitated abuse, image-based abuse, and other forms of physical, psychological, social, cultural or financial harm.
From 1 January 2026, the National Higher Education Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender-based Violence (also known as the ‘National Code’) will officially establish required standards and best practices for how higher education providers (including universities) will prevent and respond to gender-based violence.
Our University’s response to the National Code has been informed by student and staff feedback, the lived experience of victim-survivors, and the expertise of our researchers, and is being consolidated into a Whole-of-Organisation Action Plan focused on prevention, education, support and continuous improvement. The Action Plan builds on the consultation, policy, procedures and frameworks developed in response to the Respect@Work Act and obligations of the Work Health Safety Act 2011 (NSW) described in the Sexual and gender-based harassment Code of Practice.
Everyone has the right to work, study and participate at our University with safety, trust, equity and respect, and everyone at the University has a role to play in creating this culture.

Respect at work
The University provides training and support to staff to ensure we are creating a safer and more respectful workplace. A range of resources are available that aim to both prevent and respond to situations involving sexual assault, sexual harassment or sex-based harassment.
The University of Newcastle acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands within our footprint areas: Awabakal, Darkinjung, Biripai, Worimi, Wonnarua, and Eora Nations. We also pay respect to the wisdom of our Elders past and present.
