Non standard software
In most cases software licencing and installation is managed by 17triplezero IT Service Desk.
Software packages that are not included in our Managed Operating Environment (MOE), and relevant to certain specialist areas, are managed by ARCS.

Intel & Portland (AMD) compilers for Linux
The University of Newcastle has a flexlm campus licence of the following compilers:
- Intel (Intel 32 bit and 64 bit)
- Portland Group (AMD 32 bit and 64 bit)
These compilers support the languages C, C++, Fortran77 and Fortran90.
The licencing allows the compiler software to be installed on multiple linux machines but when the compiler is used the flexlm server is contacted to see if the licence is available.

Matlab
The University of Newcastle has a campus site licence for Matlab.
This licence allows all staff/postgraduate and undergrade students to run matlab on all computers owned by the University of Newcastle.
Staff and RHD students (not undergraduates) may install Matlab on their personal/home computers.
There are three licence types available
Home use/laptop (standalone)

Classroom/teaching site licence - must be installed on a University owned computer
Licence includes all toolboxes in the home use licence and the "Symbolic Maths Toolbox"
Research site licence - must be installed on a University owned computer
Licence includes all toolboxes in the home use license and the "Extended Symbolic Maths Toolbox"
The University also has a site licence for the Matlab distributed compute engine (8 nodes). This software is currently installed on the Microsoft Compute Cluster.
Redhat Linux Grid
The University of Newcastle has a grid of Redhat Linux compute nodes that are combined under SUN gridengine software.
The Linux grid is best suited to non-interactive 'batch' jobs where the data is read in from a file and results are written to an output file. Interactive jobs are usually run one at a time and may have to wait until a free grid node is available. There are other non-grid nodes available for interactive jobs and compiling/developing software.
The current grid configuration consists of a grid head node that maintains the queues, a submit node on which jobs are compiled/test run/submitted to the grid and a number of execute nodes on which your program is executed. The execute nodes are configured identically and there is no way to tell which node will be selected by the grid. The hardware configuration of the grid is as follows:
• Grid Head: 64 bit Sun Solaris 10 x86 (1x Opteron CPUs with 1GB ram)
• Submit Node: 64 bit Redhat AS4 Linux (2x Opteron CPUs with 4GB ram)
• 14 Execute Nodes: 64 bit Redhat AS4 Linux (2x Opteron CPUs with 4GB ram)
