Applications and Capabilities

GC-MS

The ABRF’s GC-MS is a Thermo Scientific Trace GC Ultra-DSQ II system.  The DSQ II mass spectrometer features a dual-stage, single-quadrupole design.  This instrument is a latest generation GC-MS and was installed in late 2006.  It is fitted with a dual-capability ionisation source that can operate in Electron Impact (EI) or Chemical Ionisation (CI) modes.  EI is the most common ionisation mode used for GC-MS applications.  The mass range of the DSQ II is 1 to 1050u.  Additionally, this system is equipped with a liquids and headspace autosampler.   Searching against mass spectral libraries (databases) for compound identification and/or confirmation is possible using the installed libraries (NIST 2008, NIST RI, Wiley 8th, Fiehn Metabolomics, Max Planck GOLM, and many others).

What applications/analyses is GC-MS suitable for?

GC-MS is ideally suited to the analysis of many small molecular weight organic and inorganic  compounds.  These include:

  • amino acids
  • organic acids
  • fatty acids & triglycerides
  • lipids
  • steroids
  • sugars
  • pesticides & herbicides
  • pharmaceutical/nutraceutical
  • volatile & semi-volatile organics
  • explosive compounds
  • petrochemical / hydrocarbons
  • forensics
