INDUCTION FOR ANIMAL RESEARCHERS

 

The Animal Welfare and Training Unit provides an induction for animal-based researchers who are new to the University. The induction covers the following topics:

  1. Legislation governing the use of animals for research or teaching purposes.

     

  2. Roles and responsibilities of the Animal Care and the Ethics Committee.
  3. The ethics of animal use.
  4. Responsibilities of researchers with respect to animal use.
  5. Planning your project with Animal Services Unit staff.
  6. Steps to obtaining Animal Care and Ethics Committee approval.
  7. Completion of an application form to the Animal Care and Ethics Committee.
  8. Recognition of animal well being, pain and distress.
  9. Alleviation of pain and distress in animals.
  10. Monitoring of animal welfare in research projects.
  11. Safety issues associated with the use of animals.
