About the Animal Care and Ethics Committee

The Terms of Reference and Constitution of the Animal Care and Ethics Committee must be in accordance with the NSW Animal Research legislation. The NSW Animal Research legislation directs the Animal Care and Ethics Committee to monitor all aspects of the care and use of animals for research or teaching purposes, and to carry out regular inspections of work areas, as well as breeding and holding areas. Inspections are performed by both members of the Committee and the Animal Welfare Officer. To ensure consistency of reporting, standard report formats are used during regular inspections of animal breeding and research facilities by the Committee.

Role of the Animal Care and Ethics Committee

The Animal Care and Ethics Committee reports to The Council and is responsible for the consideration of ethical and welfare aspects as well as the scientific or educational value of the use of animals for research and teaching purposes.

Its membership includes the following categories:

Category A:	Veterinarians
Category B:	Researchers experienced with the use of animals for scientific or teaching purposes
Category C:	Members who are members of or are nominated by an animal welfare organisation
Category D:	Independent members who are not associated with animal-based research, and not associated with the institution except under defined circumstances.
